Euro Natural Stone Travertine

Any knowledgeable stone pavers will tell you that travertine is not as tough as marble or granite is. However, travertine is extremely durable. It is worth noting that the exterior of the famous Colosseum in Rome comprises travertine stone. Therefore, you can rest assured that your travertine tiles will last for years.

Travertine tiles typically come in a range of shades primarily in white, beige or cream. These colours exude a natural aesthetic appeal that will win people’s attention. Moreover, these shades will blend perfectly with the existing colours of the decoration and furniture. In addition, the soft natural appearance of travertine helps in creating a relaxed feel.

You might have come across workers engaged in stacking stone or stone cladding. Consider asking these workers about the stone that is easiest to cut and shape. They would readily agree that they could cut and shape travertine tiles easily enough. Therefore, if you require travertine tiles to fill small or odd-shaped spaces, this will not be difficult to accomplish.

Replacing tiles also becomes easier with travertine tiles. If you need to replace a few tiles of other stone materials, you would find it hard to come across an exact likeness. In contrast, travertine slabs and tiles are easier to match up.

Marble bench tops and marble sinks might be very attractive and elegant to look at. However, as mentioned earlier, travertine tiles have increased in prominence in recent times. People love the beautiful and luxurious finish offered by these tiles. In addition, travertine tiles are not as expensive as some of the other natural stones are.

The formation of travertine is a natural process. When groundwater travels through limestone, it dissolves the calcium carbonate present in the limestone. Over time, the mineral content saturates the water, causing it to separate from the deposits of calcium carbonate. On reaching the surface, thin layers of calcite or aragonite begin to form. These deposits eventually become travertine deposits.

Marble suppliers obtain their supplies from the quarries. Similarly, travertine slab manufacturers typically obtain travertine from the quarries. Experts usually examine the stone to assess the quality of the stone and its colour. Thereafter, they utilise one of the following methods for removing the raw material from the quarry.

  • With Channelling Machines: Workers use these machines that have large chisels for cutting away sections of travertine from the surrounding stones. To achieve this, they tap into the natural joints present within the stone. This nullifies the possibility of any damage to the stone they are quarrying or leaving behind.
  • With Wire Saws: These rely on strands of wires for cutting the materials from the rock. Powered by electricity or fuel, these wires wear out rapidly. Therefore, manufacturers need to have sufficient supplies of wires at hand.
  • With Chain Saws: Similar to the traditional chain saws, these chain saws possess larger and stronger blades. Often equipped with diamond tips or carbide, these machines can slice through the stone very quickly.
  • With Water-Jet Cutters: This method relies on using a high-pressure stream of water for cutting through the travertine.

On receiving the material from the quarry, the manufacturer will the travertine blocks into smaller slabs of a suitable thickness. Then, the manufacturer will cut the slabs again with precise cutting equipment into travertine tiles. Lastly, the workers will sand the tiles down to a consistent thickness. This serves to simplify the task of laying the tiles.
